3.3 Why, according to Antonio, must the Duke side with Shylock? Does the welfare of one man trump the financial/ health of the state?

  1. According to Antonio the Duke has to side with Shylock to assure all foreigners are welcomed to trade in Venice. If the Duke interferes it will make the foreigners feel as if the trade in Venice is not equal for everyone and this could ruin the city for it is very prosperous due to the large amount of trade. No it does not Antonio understand the agreements of term and decided to accept the deal so the state should not be at fault for his decisions.

  2. At the time, Venice was a very wealthy city. This was primarily because of the booming trade industry. Antonio tells the Duke to side with Shylock because trade throughout the city is not always equal. By making the trading market equal, Antonio hopes that they can attract foreigners to the trading market in Venice, which would ultimately make a profit for the Duke and for the city. One man may not be able to convince the Duke, but Antonio is a man of power and wealth, which could play a part in the Duke's decision.

  3. Antonio says that the Duke must listen to what the bond says because otherwise he would be impeached. He has to let Shylock take a pound of flesh or he is interfering with what the law states. In a way I do think that welfare does trump financial/ health of the state. This is because Antonio is a very wealthy and powerful person which could persuade the Duke into making the decision Antonio wants about the bond

  4. According to Antonio, the Duke must side with Shylock for the financial health of the state. He says that if he does not allow Shylock to take his bond, then foreign merchants such as Shylock will lose their security. Since Venice makes a lot of it's money off of foreign merchants, this would take a toll on the economy of Venice. When asked if the welfare of one man trumps the financial health of the state, it can be seen from a few perspectives. From the Christian point of view it does, but when looked at from a economical or even political point of view, it would be more beneficial for Shylock to reap what he has sowed and take his bond. It is a tricky subject no matter how you look at it.

According to Antonio, it would be best to side with Shylock for the financial health of Venice. He says this because trading in Venice isn't always fair and for the Duke to save a wealthy Christian from a Jew would display that unfairness and anger the foreigners whom Venice trades with. And if those foreigners are angry they won't want to trade which will lead to ruining the Venice economy. Antonio being a Venice trader himself would not want to promote that. Therefore Antonio gives in and realizes that his welfare is worth risking.

    1. Mr. Rauh, I respectively disagree with you. You were correct when you said that disrespecting a foreigner and ignoring the law would result in a large decline in Venice's financial health. However, I disagree with you when you said that Antonio does not want to disgrace his reputation and therefore willingly risks his welfare. Antonio only agrees to make the bond with Shylock because he believes that his ships will make it back and he will be able to pay back the debt with no problem. He would gladly treat Shylock unlawfully and ignore the bond if he could, but the law prevents him. Also, I believe that in Antonio's case the welfare of Shylock does not effect the financial health of Venice. Jews were considered as complete outsiders that all Christians would have seen similarly. This means that Christian merchants coming in from other parts of Europe would not have been offended at a slightly unlawful treatment of Shylock. Anyway, Antonio could pay back the bond so people would have seen Shylock as just some blood thirsty Jewish monster.

  6. According to Antonio, the Duke must side with Shylock because if he does not the state of Venice will fall to ruin. Venice is based off of economics and the trading of money. If the Duke sides with Antonio, effectively saying that interest and bonds are not allowed, Venice will lose all of its foreign money lenders. In this case, the welfare of one man can trump the financial health of the state. If Antonio does not have to give up one pound of flesh, then the Duke is saying that all bonds are invalid. This would trump the health of the state.

Antonio states that the duke cannot deny the law, otherwise it will disturb the justice of a foreigner's state. The leaders of Venice cannot make exceptions to the rules. Shylock understands that he is at a disadvantage because he is a Jew. Shylock tells of how he was called a dog by Christians, but now they must fear his fangs. I agree with John about the welfare of one man trumping the financial health of the state. An agreement was reached between Antonio and Shylock requiring Antonio to pay the pound of flesh if the bond is not returned.

Antonio believes that if the Duke interferes with the loan between Shylock and Antonio, then the traders from other countries that trade in Venice will not be able to trade because they are foreign just like Shylock, a Jew. I disagree with Nick because the financial health of the state does not trump the life of a man. Instead of losing his life, Antonio should work or find some way to pay Shylock. A life should not be taken because of a loan.

According to Antonio, the Duke must agree to Shylock's bond so they can maintain the financial well being of Venice. If the Duke were to pardon Antonio from the law then it may cause a revolt from Jews or people would begin to think that they can be exempt from the rules(citizens wont pay for their loans)

The Duke must side with Shylock because if he doesn't then the entire country of Venice would be affected through trade by it. Other countries don't like it went people go back on their word when it comes to deals or arrangements. I believe that the welfare of one man does not trump the financial welfare or health of the state because if the state is in terrible condition it could affect the safety of everyone else in the country.

The situation as it is is a very wealthy Jewish merchant known as Shylock that if the bond be denied, then it would lead to consequences. Antonio states that the Duke cannot side with Shylock if he wants to maintain the financial state of Venice because if he does side with the welfare of Antonio, then foreign merchants may not feel safe to trade there any longer and it would lead to a large plummet in there economic state. As for if the welfare of Antonio is more important, I would argue that morally it is while financially it isn't since they would be suffering more money than they could make back with Antonio living, especially since Antonio has just lost all of his ships.

Antonio believes that the Duke must side with Shylock for one key reason, it is the law. Antonio states that if the Duke were to not punish Antonio, it would wound the financial state of Venice. This is true because if the Duke were to allow Antonio to break the law, he would have to make other exceptions and it would slowly make the state loose revenue. Also, the welfare of one man does not trump the health of the financial state. If the financial state were to plummet and fall, Venice could fall into chaos resulting in the death of many more than just one.

  13. because if the duke had not allowed shylock to take his bond he would be taking away something that was shylocks right by law. and if he could just change the law or make it so the law does not affect certain people the law would become arbitrary. and many other people would begin breaking the law which could ruin Venice.

According to Antonio, the Duke must sign with Shylock because the Duke cannot interfere with the law. If the Duke were to interfere with the law, it would cause Venice to financial decline. Venice would have the reputation of being unjust in their bonds. All the bonds made could be considered invalid if the people involved in the bonds end up breaking them. Venice would be considered to have no credibility and their financial health would collapse. In this case, the health of the state would be more important than the welfare of one man.

  15. The Duke must agree with Shylock because it is the written law, according to Antonio. Antonio realizes this while talking after Shylock has left. He says the law will back Shylock, which is good enough for Shylock. The welfare of a man should trump law here because Shylock is doing this out of revenge, not for actual legal purposes. Shylock was offered 36,000 ducets in comparison to the 3,000 he lent out. He is misusing the laws here for his personal revenge, which isn't right.

  16. The duke must grant Shylock the pound of flesh because it was written in the bond and by law you cannot break a bond therefore Antonio must give up a pound of flesh. The welfare of a man should overcome law because it isn't really worth killing someone for revenge. Shylock should want to become a rich man rather than becoming a murder.

  18. The duke must allow Shylock to carry out his bond because it was the law. Had the duke allowed Antonio to not lose a pound of flesh, the Venetian court would no longer be a credible jury. The welfare of a man should trump health of the state because Shylock's intentions to kill Antonio were only based on hatred, not money.

The duke has to side with Shylock because it was written in the bond that Antonio has to lose a pound of flesh and it can not be broken. If the duke would not have side with Shylock, Venice would lose their reputation of having fair laws. This would affect Venice and cause it to have a financial decline.

  20. The duke must agree with Shylock according to Antonio because if not he risks putting Venice in danger of losing the trades it thrives from. Antonio seems content with that .

The Duke must side with Shylock because if he doesn't the whole reputation of "Italy" plummets. Rules are rules and laws are laws. The rule couldn't be broken to save Antonio because if it was bypasses all other laws would mean nothing. It is better to save the reputation and lawfulness of "Italy" than to save one man and have it suffer.

  23. The Duke must go along with Shylock's bond because if he does not, all the state law will be seen as unjust. It would make all other bonds invalid in a way. If he does make Venician laws appear unjust, it may lead to financial decline with the state.

The Duke must side with Shylock because Venice is a very wealthy trading city. The city makes its living by trading and following the rules of the law. Even though the does not like Shylock because one, he is a Jew, and two, he is having a trial against Antonio who is a pretty good man in true because he has bailed out many men in debt. The welfare of one man does not trump the finacial/ health of the state because everybody makes mistakes, even the best of us. We just need to take the consequences and live the rest of our lives.

  25. Shylock had a written document signed by Antonio. For this, the Duke was forced to allow Shylock to carry out his bond. If the Duke did not do this, he would be making the financial state of Venice look weak. If it looked weak to others, it would loose lots of its trade and wealth. The Duke justified that the wealth and a healthy financial state was worth more than Antonio's life. For these reasons, I think this is why the Duke sided with Shylock.

  26. The Duke has to side with Shylock because this is a very clear written, official deal which cannot be halted. If the Duke says that this deal is too harsh and overturns it, he will disrupt the neutrality of Venice's government. To outsiders, the city will look unjust because it allows deals in some aspects, and disallows them in others. So they will not trade with Venice. This reputation is worth more than Antonio's life. However, someone could save Antonio's life if they convinced Shylock to stop the punishment.

  28. The Duke must side with Shylock because Antonio broke a clearly written out covenant between the two of them. If the Duke were to side with Antonio and say that Shylock was being rash, then that would show a lot about the legal system in Venice. If the Duke were to give Antonio the benefit of the doubt, then maybe people would see it as being prejudice against a Jew, or favoring a Christian.

  29. Antonio says the Duke must side with Shylock because if he sides with him the duke will be hurting the conomy of Venice This would affect venice because all of the christians that make bonds with jews will not pay their bonds, because the duke will side with the christian or wo is going to be killed over money.

  30. The duke must side with shylock because that is part of there agreement If he doesn't then it shows that the trades deals in Venice are black and white and the rules can be bent which is bad for venires good trading reputation. No I don't think the welfare of one mans life trumps the financial heath of the state.
